Hefei Earthquake, 3.4

Last night, on April 6, around 10:30 pm, Hefei experienced an earthquake that measured 3.4 on the Richter scale. I definitely felt it, but wasn’t sure if that was what was going on until a student called me to tell me they were evacuating the buildings on campus—although that was 1.5 hours later! It took awhile for news to spread that that is what it actually was.

  1. No way...I have never had one in my years in Hefei. What's going on with the quakes! Italy just had a bad one too.

  2. Hi Jen! Glad to hear you are safe. Yes these earthquakes around he world (Italy, etc) are a bit scary. Good to hear you are OK. Let me know if SKYPEing is possible with your students. I have it on a computer at Centennial HS and some of the students would love to talk to your students...13hr difference? I could have kids at school at 7am Ohio time if you had your students for a possible evening seminar/conference. Let me know if you are interested. So far no takers for the penpals.Getting close to testing and end of the year activities. I will keep trying, if you wish. Again, let me know. Take care and keep having fun!

  4. Hello fellow Hefei-er! I just started working at Anhui Agricultural University, though I've been here before for a summer Chinese learning program, so it's not my first time to Hefei. Glad to find another expat blogger in the same city!

I definitely was not aware of the earthquake until the next day. I just thought my neighbors dropped something, as they were pretty noisy that night.

Anyway, here's my blog in case you're interested: http://www.rosehansen.net/blog/
